Postgraduate Diploma/LLM in: International, Oil, Gas and Energy Law by online learning

Study for an online distance learning PgDip in just 12 months, with opportunity to top up to an LLM

Course Commences: 27th November 2017 (Application deadline: 20th November 2017)

London Metropolitan University

The course focusses on the practical aspects of oil and gas law and is set in the broader context of contemporary energy regulation, law and policy. It seeks to develop a deep understanding of how to resolve the challenges posed to international energy corporations, national and regional authorities, and those working in the renewable sector: how to ensure to society an adequate supply of energy which is both secure and sustainable.

Those working in the oil and gas sectors increasingly want and need to have an understanding of the legal principles that underpin many of their activities, from the drafting of basic contracts to the intricacies, controversies and complexities of the international regimes covering such matters as oil pollution from ships and the delimitation of continental shelf reserves between adjacent and opposite states.

This course seeks to introduce students to the fundamental precepts of English commercial law; to the institutional legal framework of the oil and gas economies; to contracts; regulations and treaties relating to oil and gas exploration and exploitation (including those relating to environmental issues); and to matters of finance, including investment, insurance and taxation.

The postgraduate diploma course is taught over 12 months. It comprises an introductory module and six core modules. Each module gives a thorough grounding in a key area of law as it relates to the oil, gas and energy industry. The core modules refer to aspects of law covered in other modules, bringing together in a coherent way the subject areas that comprise “international oil, gas and energy law”.

The course is taught by self-study of comprehensive module manuals. Students are encouraged to read beyond the manuals to take in specified cases and articles in legal journals. Students have the opportunity to discuss theoretical issues as well as develop practical problem-solving skills.

The course requires regular use of online legal resources and students are supported in undertaking legal research using our electronic databases. The course team will respond promptly to queries and will strive to ensure that students feel well supported and engaged throughout their studies.

The course materials are accessed through an online learning platform that contains a detailed manual for each module, useful web links, a discussion forum, study skills materials. Each module is assessed by a coursework assignment which is submitted online.

Each module includes:

  • The core study material for that module
  • A series of short thought-provoking questions placed throughout the chapter to enable you to assess your understanding of the material
  • A bibliography of relevant sources which you can dip into freely to extend your knowledge and understanding of particular areas of law

The Introductory Module

This module will introduce you to key concepts that are necessary for the study of law in the modules that follow.

The Core Modules

The six core modules comprise the compulsory element of the course. You will:
